Trophy Extra Special Stout’s No DNA Needed campaign celebrated African originality. Fronted by 2Baba, Made Kuti, Simi Drey and Tacha, its raison d’être was that Blackness, African culture and originality need no external validation.
I wrote and performed the campaign's manifesto, bringing that idea to life through spoken word poetry that embodied the African maverick.
It was a declaration of creative independence that also spoke to who gets to define Black identity, and who gets to claim ownership of its expression.
In a capitalistic world where Black identity is so often packaged and sold back to us, I wanted the work to feel like a reclamation. Not an appeal for recognition, but a refusal to ask for it. The campaign ran across Trophy's channels and on radio in parts of Nigeria.
